Sunday Sundown Rundown - 11/20/16

3 Up 

1. Cast of Hamilton - Kudos to the Broadway cast who decided to use their platform with Vice-President-elect Pence in the house to deliver a perfect statement. Regardless of what some will say, the statement was articulately stated, and definitely speaks for many Americans within the country. 

2. WWE Survivor Series Weekend - I'm so happy as a fan to see that Survivor Series has some meaning once again. The WWE delivered big time this weekend with a fun NXT Takeover Show, as well as tonight, with a VERY enjoyable Survivor Series event. How about that Goldberg/Lesnar match, huh? 

  • 2A. Randy Orton - Class act by Orton breaking character for a moment to console Shane McMahon's kid who was ringside after McMahon suffered what looked like an obvious concussion. 

3. Kate Upton - Look, the tweets were funny, but not exactly something kids should see. Regardless, Upton was dead on in that Justin Verlander should have won the AL Cy Young Award. Some think she's out of line, but personally, I think it's pretty cool that she cares and actually understands the BBWAA voting system, and by that, I mean that no one does.

1. Cops Shot - It's so damn unfortunate to see police officers shot in active duty as a normal thing now. And don't give me that "this is what the Black Lives Matter movement encourages" garbage either. This is sad, all the way around. Lets leave the BS politics and media driven rhetoric out of it for once. No one wants this. 

2. Overt Racism - From the West Virginia governor who called First Lady Michelle Obama an "Ape", to the Maryland teacher caught on tape calling students the N-word, to the Alabama police officer tweeting that Michelle Obama speaks "ghetto", to the multiple hate crimes seen across the nation, it's all so damn sad. It's like we turned the clock back 40 years. 

3. Kanye West - This dude is nuts. When will some of these unconditional Kanye fans open their eyes and quit placing this dude on such a pedestal.

1. Sharon Jones - An absolute favorite of mine, the awesome performer lost her fight to cancer this weekend. So glad I had the opportunity to see her live this past summer. Cancer sucks.

Turning 40 - Grateful and Renewed

I became a forty-year-old individual yesterday.  The milestone is very significant for many and has its societal measures and benchmarks that carry some fear for those approaching its gates. Regardless of approach, turning 40 is filled with reflection, pondering (of course), and preparation for what should be a "new" stage of life. A life stage centered around "transitioning" into a stage seen as the "pre-senior" years.  Sure. Whatever.  I won't disagree that the new "4" digit that sits in front of your age feels encompassing even without understanding completely. Yet, as I stated last year when I turned 39 (going into my 40th year on this earth), I was ready for it. Ready for 40. Today, oddly enough, I am not filled with profound life lessons, ponderings, or reflections.  I sit here, punching the keys, filled with gratitude. Knicks Trauma - Ugh Not Again

Well, that was a kick in the stomach.  Coming off a week where the word "catharsis" was used as the description for the euphoria and release of joy from two and a half decades of suffering, Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Indiana Pacers brought about another word - trauma.  Watching the Knicks collapse was the kind of moments that come with these deep runs and moments. NBA Playoff basketball will do that. Yet, this loss - this one - feels about as bad as the 2004 ALCS when the Yankees collapsed in the series to the Boston Red Sox.  That one carries some serious trauma. Luckily, the series isn't over.  Some other quick thoughts from this awful, awful night, New York Knicks Basketball.  - Not to conjure up hyperbole, or even contribute to "hot take" sports reaction culture - but this might have been the worst loss in Knicks franchise history.
