Dome Pondering Movie Review: The Fits (2015)

What is it about?

Toni, a little girl training at a boxing gym becomes enamored with dance. As she struggles to fit in and to pick up the routines, the group begins to suffer from fainting and violent spells.

Who is in it?

Royalty Hightower - Toni

Alexis Neblett - Breezy

Favorite Scene:

In her first day with the rest of the newbies, known as "crabs", an older girl walks the group through a routine to which they had to repeat. The group does, but in a very raw, uncoordinated, and comedic way.

Favorite Quote:

"We think it might be something in the water"

Review:

The Fits is a film that really causes some thought reflection. IT really can't be put into a box on what it is, or what it ought to be. Really, what it is, is a film that leaves it all up to you. And even then, it plays with your mind a bit.

The film revolves around the metaphor of attemtping to fit in, and the struggle that it is. Sometimes, you lose bits of your true self as well as having to go through some difficulties. How you are left to interpret the violent "fits" is up to you. And for me, that is party the beauty of this movie.

The Fits isn't for everyone. It's low budget. at times, slow moving. Minimal dialogue - like, really minimal dialogue - with plenty of visual scenes. But if you're one that loves a good thought-provoking movie, give this one a whirl.

Working in Higher Ed, Lately

"Working in higher education must be interesting these days, huh?" That question was posed to me by several people who recently learned that I worked in higher education. It's remarkable to think that I've been serving students and following a passion for this long. This is especially the case considering the rising turnover, the documented yearly burnout, and the increasing exodus from the field.  And, yup, there is that whole enrollment cliff combined with the politics that are more present than ever on college campuses.  So yeah, higher education is weird right now. Very weird.  Some quick thoughts : IS IT TIME?  Yes, I have thought about leaving the field several times. Especially, over the last few years. COVID didn't really bother me, but it's safe to say that the world of higher edu...
