The Pondering 10 - Favorite ROH Wrestlers

As ROH closed its doors on an era that likely will no longer exist, regardless of the company's fate, I can't but help to have some nostalgia for the company. At one time, ROH was an enjoyable and legitimate option for yours truly when it came to wrestling. In many ways, a saving grace when pro wrestling felt a bit bleak during that time in history. 

With that said, in the following Pondering 10, I share my favorite wrestlers from ROH: 

10. Silas Young - Not a super popular pick for many (I know), but I always enjoyed the gimmick of Silas Young as the "Last Real Man". In a company with very few gimmicks, I always thought Silas' deal gave him a unique feel, and that was enhanced by his appearance. 

9. Low Ki - One of the most unique wrestlers I've ever seen - I'm just a fan of Low Ki, wherever he goes. A young (and highly motivated) Low Ki getting a break in the up-and-coming ROH was fun to watch. Lots of memorable matches. 

8. Briscoe Brothers - Truthfully, I'm been shocked they've never left ROH. But with that, they're pillars for the company. I wasn't necessarily a huge fan, but always enjoyed and respected their work, especially that of Jay Briscoe. 

7. Jay Lethal - The eventual "Franchise" of ROH as he became over the past decade, Lethal shed his "Black Machismo" reputation of TNA years and cultivated himself as a more rounded wrestler in ROH. I especially enjoyed his time with Truth Martini and the House of Truth. Awesome theme song as well.


6. Dalton Castle - Dalton was special. Among a sea of badass gimmicks in a hardcore wrestling fan's environment, Castle brought a flashy and over-the-top gimmick that became a hit. His entrance was a must-see (with The boys), and his facials were entertaining. And of course, he could back it up in the ring. 

5. Kevin Steen - Kevin Steen (now, Kevin Owens, of course) was special. And remains special. His time in ROH was the first glimpse of that. I will always remember his feud with El Generico (now Sami Zayn). After all, how could you not? 

4. Takeshi Morishima - I was a huge fan of Morishima's run as ROH Champ. For starters, at the time you RARELY saw Japanese talent spotlighted in a serious manner on American television. Kudos to ROH for that. Morishima was badass. Like, legit badass.

3. Samoa Joe - See everything about Kevin Steen being special and double it here for Joe. 

2. Bryan Danielson - Obvious. American Dragon was cool. The Final Countdown theme was awesome. Telling the referee he had until five was a gimmick you couldn't wait to should alongside him. Most of all, the dude can go in the ring. You knew Danielson was bound for greatness. 

1. Nigel McGuinness - My guy in ROH was always Nigel McGuinness. I enjoyed and loved everything about the gimmick and the persona. The cocky Brit with the grunge music, leather jacket (and the union jack interior), wearing the belt backward, the frosted tips - everything came together for just a complete jerk of a character that was amazing in the ring. I loved it. Give me anything McGuiness vs. Danielson - I'll sit and watch intently.

Exorcising Demons with a Breen "Double Bang!"

These sorts of moments feel like they don't happen to us.  Well, they happen VERY rarely - I'm talking Larry Johnson's 4-point play-rare. Yeah, it's been THAT long.  But watching this New York Knicks team score eight points in less than thirty-five seconds, including a sequence that will forever live in my fandom, sits right with that LJ garden-rocking shot.  I sat on my couch in absolute shock at what I just saw.  "How the hell did they just win that game?!"  It's the kind of moment this fanbase deserves. It's the moment that releases and exorcises some demons that haunt us from the trauma of experiences.  Namely you, Reggie Miller.  I loved it. And the icing on the cake was Mike Breen - Oh, Mike Breen, the loveable man with the most epic voice that has narrated so much of my basketball-loving fandom - with not one, but two signature "Bang!" calls.  I'll never let this one down. Sunday Sundown Rundown - 4/28/24

3 Up 1. DiVincenzo Shot - Yeah, I'm biased. And you know what, I don't care. This moment brought me so many jobs this week, and it still is. "Bang! Bang!"  2. Caitlin Clark Effect - Well, here we go. So many of the WNBA teams have begun moving their games against the Indiana Fever to larger arenas. The upcoming WNBA season is going to be so incredibly interesting. 3. Candace Parker - Rounding out a hoops-heavy "Up" this week is the retirement of Candace Parker. Yes, she drives the Knicks fanbase bonkers, but Parker is one of the greatest to ever lace them up. It's a shame she had to retire due to injury, but nonetheless, she should be proud. I personally will remember the 2021 WNBA Finals where she led her hometown Chicago Sky over the star-studded Phoenix Mercury.  3 Down 1. Campus Protests - I've witnessed them personally at NYU. Sunday Sundown Rundown - 4/14/24

3 Up 1. Gun Control? - Wow. We have somewhat new gun legislation - so it is possible?! Of course, I'm being a bit cheeky in regards to the recent new plan to offer background checks for gun purchases, which really is a big part of the gun control debate. No?  2. Solar Eclipse - I didn't get a chance to experience it, but the idea of it is rather cool. Our world - and universe - is a remarkable experience and thought.  3. Women's Basketball Ratings - The boost continues as women's hoops continue its surge in ratings, interest, and overall star power. It will likely continue next week with the WNBA Draft.  3 Down  1. Iran Missiles on Israel - The entire saga in Gaza continues to get more complex. Throwing Iran into the mix, and now the US intercepting drones and missiles, the entire thing is super sad as innocent people continue to be killed.  2.
