Sunday Sundown Rundown - 8/11/24

3 Up

1. Olympics - It was a memorable Olympics for various reasons. Quite honestly, it was one of the best Olympic Games in my lifetime. I sort of miss having so many options to watch sports - a variety of them - on the daily.

1a. Peacock App - It's still an app with a frustrating user interface, but having the option to watch sports on-demand was awesome. My appreciation to ALL involved in making that happen.

2. Tim Walz - In the "up" is the announcement of Walz as the VP pick for Kamala Harris. Walz gets the nod here not because of an endorsement, but because I thought he did a great job entering the race this week. And also, it's good to finally get both tickets set as we steamroll to Election Day.

3. Presidential Debate - Well, we've got the second one locked in for September 10th. Just when you thought there was no point in tuning into debates (especially after the last one), Trump vs. Kamala has the makings of a one-time knock-down drag out).

3 Down

1. Foiled Terror Attack - Three young persons had plans to pull off a terroristic attack on a Taylor Swift Concert. Individuals in their teens! The world's evil is reaching new depths. I just ask, "Why?!"

2. Politics - After giving the nod with two "ups", Politics gets a sour look for simply how people have responded to all of the updates and developments. It's almost like some voters want to be upset. I don't get it. Whatevs.

3. White Sox - They. Are. Terrible. Yikes.

Working in Higher Ed, Lately

"Working in higher education must be interesting these days, huh?" That question was posed to me by several people who recently learned that I worked in higher education. The recent discourse around the industry and field has certainly shifted in narrative and the overall feel within it. I recently wrapped up my fourteenth (!!) academic year. It's remarkable to think that I've been serving students and following a passion for this long. This is especially the case considering the rising turnover, the documented yearly burnout, and the increasing exodus from the field.  And, yup, there is that whole enrollment cliff combined with the politics that are more present than ever on college campuses.  So yeah, higher education is weird right now. Very weird.  Some quick thoughts : IS IT TIME?  Yes, I have thought about leaving the field several times. Especially, over the last few years. COVID didn't really bother me, but it's safe to say that the world of higher edu...
