Dome Pondering

Well, here we are closing yet another year. 2017 was freakin' weird in so many ways, and the thought that it is coming to a close is quite relieving. Like, really, really relieving. After all - for me at least - 2017 provided an unusual everyday grind, like no other in my lifetime, that defined it. Politics. News. Terror. Society. Fill in whatever it is, 2017 offered something daily.  Regardless, we're at the finish line, and like always, we're wrapping it up with the biggest post of the year on this tiny slice of the internet - the Dome Pondering Year in Review! The 12th of it's kind! Imagine that?

As always, it's the end of the year, and around these parts, that means we reflect, award, and close the year with two signature posts, beginning with this one. Of course, the other being the traditional and biggest post of the year, the 12th Annual Dome Pondering Year in Review (look for it very soon!).  With all of that said, I'll ponder on some of the most fascinating things to me in the crazy year that was 2017. And what a weird and crazy year it has been!

3 Up 1. Black Women in Alabama - First, thank you. You saved us all from witnessing another downfall from decent standards in America. And of course, I hope this movement continues to move forward as there are many black women, if unified and mobilized, and seriously change many things in this country of ours.  2. Black Thought - Ok, so the 10 second freestyle this dude ripped off earlier this week was not only insanely talented, but he delivered some truth. Super impressive, you know, if you're into hip hop.  3. Giancarlo Stanton - Giving the new Yankee the nod here for his honest thoughts in his Yankee introduction. Some may not like it, but I found it refreshing, especially when much of what he said is something all baseball fans are aware of.  3 Down 1. 49% in Alabama - While the Alabama victory was nice to see, as I stated in my post regarding the Doug Jones win , who in the world are these people STILL voting for Roy Moore? It just shows you the minds

It's amazing to me that we've come to a point in our nation where the elected senate seat of Alabama - yes, Alabama - hinges on the complete and utter bottoming out of our values.  Alabama! Folks, in my best Allen Iverson impression - we're talking about Alabama! But here we all are, unified by the indecency and craziness that has occurred from Roy Moore, combined with the current reality (and penalty?) of what happens when we do not mobilize and take action for progress. Regardless, Doug Jones won the senate seat for Alabama. We can all exhale, at least for the next few days.  Here are some quick thoughts on last night's senate race results: VOTE AGAINST THE BAD GUY Truthfully, I'm not overjoyed, but more so, relieved. It's truly an awkward place to be. Rather, it's a feeling based in a greater sense in validating an understanding of avoiding the worst rather than truly even knowing who Doug Jones is. 3 Up 1. Brian Cashman - Yes, I was one of those crazies that followed the breaking story of Stanton to the Yankees on Friday night into Saturday morning - until 4:00am to be exact. I still can't believe it's real. More so, can we give credit to Brian Cashman, who continues to prove doubters wrong in his wheeling and dealing? The rebuilding was one year, and well, that included being one win from the World Series. Just Crazy.  2. Get Out - I finally got around to watching the Jordan Peele film, and it's absolutely amazing. So thought provoking in so many ways. A great film, and ironically, one that has me thinking about visiting the in-laws in a week or so. Just kidding...sort of.  3. Supergirl - This girl is 16 and already can squat way more than I could. Yes, I don't watch football. Well, not anymore.  I've been completey sober for two years, not counting that one hiccup in watching the Super Bowl in February.  So yeah, I'm not into football. I'm not particularly fond of the sport's connection to CTE issues, it's blatant obstruction or disregard for science expressing it's connection to football, nor its handling of various matters over the years. And that's even before Colin Kaepernick decided to shake the core of our nation's reality my simply dropping to a knee.  I actually don't even care for the sport, really. The NFL is rather gross in all that it is, and has been for a long time. And for those touting college football and it's culture - excuse me. I was born, raised, and currently live in the North East. I have friends and colleagues in the South and across the country who revel in those sagas that exist only for and around Saturdays in the Fall. But, not even college

3 Up 1. " I'm Not Racist " - Even though music videos are no longer a thing, this one should be, and I'm glad it went viral. Rapper Joyner Lucas wins the week with his latest track, "I'm not racist", but even so, with his powerful music video for the track. Definitely a must watch - just be prepared for some language, but mostly, some truth. 2. Shohei Otani - Look, he may have spurned my Yankees today, but the courting process has been super interesting. There is something to be said about this backwards process, and of course, Ohtani who knows exactly what he wants in this process. Also, much props to the guy on giving up the millions he is in this process too. 3. Royal Family - I'm not one for this stuff, but I do think the idea of Mehgan Markle breaking down barriers, or in the very least, really making things less white, less classist, and less typical of the royal-culture. Why am I not surprised? This may come as a shock, but I've always found Matt Lauer to be a bit smug. I'm not sure what it was - maybe it was the tea leaves that could be read during the whole Ann Curry debacle - but the guy never emitted good vibes for me. And to be honest, I always found it rather questionable the amount of money ($20M per year!) he was being paid to anchor the TODAY show.  But really, what makes this all so hard and to take and comprehend are the details in the aftermath of it all. More so, the amount of damaging signs that were so incredibly available and known to those within NBC News. We've all read and heard the despicable actions that Lauer committed and imparted on the culture at NBC, but I've found it hard to believe that no one knew.  I understand that work cultures are difficult and dynamic, and often, the power of communication and politics is a vicious system to break. 3 Up 1. Thanksgiving Weekend - Sure, the origins date back to Pilgrims taking land from Native Americans, but hey, our entire nation is based around such things, no? Regardless of it's history, the weekend of being thankful is still a good one for those understanding and realizing how blessed they are. It's a time for good reflection, and of course, a great mental break from everyday life.  2. North Korea Escape - Can you imagine your heart rate in attempting to make your run for freedom from North Korea? Now, can you imagine the relief and joy in actually making it? Those soldiers who took their shot at the border (for essentially their lives) are some insanely courageous individuals.  3. College Basketball - I've watched way too much college basketball this holiday weekend. But, as stated above, I'm thankful for it - especially, for those who don't really care for football, like myself. Much thanks to Phil Knight and the PK80 tournament.  3 Do

We're not talking the kind of options that was once out there on a national level (ala WCW and ECW), but the kind we now have in various indie operations, the many regions that are currently on fire (UK Scene), and yes, those that you can simply log onto YouTube, or some other streaming service to find content of. The pro wrestling fan doesn't have to have cable anymore. Actually, there isn't much of a need for cable as is. And quite frankly, the pro wrestling fan probably doesn't even need national wrestling companies as well. 3 Up 1. Lt. Sayem Basad Pacha - No one will ever know what went through Pacha's head before he bear-hugged a suicide bomber the moment the vest was detonated. Aly Raisman - Following the bravery of Mckayla Maroney and others in the #MeToo campaign, Raisman has stepped forward as the charges pile up for sexual abuse by former USA Gymnastics doctor, Larry Nassar. By the way, shame on USA Gymnastics for continuing to allow this culture. I shudder to think what else lies in the world of Gymnastics.  2. New York Times - In a world where journalism - real journalism - is becoming harder and harder to find, The Times continues to break stories left and right, and did so again this week with the Louis CK piece. I snapped this photo in midtown Manhattan following a meeting with, believe it or not, various professors from my alma mater of Cazenovia College. It was tremendous catching up with them all, especially considering it's been ten-plus years since I've seen them.  Sometimes, honestly, it's almost like I forget I spent four years in upstate New York. And when I am reminded of it, often I am amazed at how such a small town helped prepare me to tackle the big city, New York City - my home.  Life is crazy.

Regardless, Flanagan's NYC Marathon win today was epic and momentous in becoming the first American-born runner to win the race in 40 years. 2. Houston Astros - What a World Series! As their tag ling stated all year, they "earned history" with a spectacular year, and a gutsy playoff run. Honestly, any one else still in awe of AJ Hinch's ability to win the whole thing with the bullpen - that bullpen that he had?  BTW - Luke Gregorson won a WBC Title and a World Series championship in the same year. It's a location I know so well. I visit there. I send people there. Heck, I've worked there. And today, it was the scene of terrorism.  Imagine the horror and the absolute shock I endured to read and hear of the happenings of a truck going down the West Side Highway bike path plowing over pedestrians before slamming into a school bus near Stuyvesant High School.  This same bike path, is in the park I worked for several years ago. The same park that I cut my teeth as a professional in sports, recreation, and events. The same park I grew to appreciate for the three years I worked there. The same park I still go to often. The same park I send students for programs and events today.

3 Up 1. World Series - And just when you thought baseball couldn't follow up last year's gem with a repeat performance, they do just that. The Fall Classic has been great, and quite frankly, I don't want it to end.  2. Saudi Arabia Women - Well, Saudi Arabia is now following their recent legislation to allow women the ability to drive with access at sporting stadiums. Again, we can be cynical, but it's just another reminder of the vast social justice issues still being fought for across the globe.  3. Women Saved at Sea - After being adrift at sea for several months - Yes, months! - two women were finally rescued this week. I can't even begin to imagine the story they have. Joe Girardi's run as New York Yankees manager has come to an end. I found it fitting that Girardi was the first one to confirm the news with his letter proclaiming "The Yankees have decided not to bring me back." That statement itself says so much in terms of emotion, want, and overall, who pulled the trigger on this divorce. Regardless, there are several thoughts this Yankees fan has after this hammer came down:

3 Up 1. #MeToo - Kudos and so much props to all of the women who shared their stories of being abused. I personally read the stories of former students I am connected with on social media, and the stories abound are a wake up call to all of us men. We need to be better. 2. Los Angeles Dodgers - Just one loss all postseason, and the best team in baseball all year long now find themselves on the big stage in the World Series. They'll have their workout cutout against a tough Astros team. 3. AJ Styles - One of my favorite pro wrestlers of all-time performed in Chile, received a phone call to cover a match not happening, then appeared at WWE TLC against Finn Balor in a memorable night. The life of pro wrestlers are so, so, so rough. Kudos to Styles on delivering - like he always does. 3 Down 1. Somalia Attack - First, the story of the Somalia bombing is horrific. The thought that it wasn't covered as much as other terrorist attacks says so much about the Western world.

Well, it finally came to an end, and yes, I am disappointed. I know I said "whatever happens in the ALCS" in my previous post following the ALDS clincher over the Indians, but this one still hurts. Yes, the Yankees were in an unfamiliar role as underdog being in their "rebuilding" year and that's seems to be the medicine everyone is taking for this pain, but you know what? ALCS appearances don't come around too often - even if you're the New York Yankees - and going this far shouldn't ever - EVER - be taken for granted. I wanted this series. I wanted the World Series. I wanted the Dodgers in the Fall Classic. But instead, Houston, the better, more deserving team in the series, gets the nod for the American League. Despite all of the emotions and adrenaline settling now that the 2017 season is over, I am in fact excited for April. Hollywood Victims - Much props to the many men and women who have taken the step in telling their story about sexual assault and being the victim of displays of power for sexual gain within Hollywood. It's tough, especially in such an unforgiving business like show business, but it takes guts to tell the truth - much respect to you all who did so. 2. Joe Girardi - Have you ever seen a more brutally honest manager or head coach during a playoff stretch? Girardi has been letting his soul bare on mistakes, feelings, lineups, results, decisions, his family, his time in New York, and anything and everything else. Damn. I love this team.  I don't know what it is, or what spurred this immediate attachment in Spring Training, but I just do. Maybe it was the idea of hope and all of the wonders and excitement it brings. You know, when your squad finally ditches the old expensive brigade and gives the keys to the prospects we've been hearing about.  Maybe that was it.  Or, maybe it was the excitement produced by Gary Sanchez just the year before. And the near-miss of the playoffs the team teased the year prior.  Or...maybe it was just the idea of dancing around the word "rebuilding" and having no (not low) expectations for the 2017 season. Quite frankly, we were playing with house cards, and that's a fun position to be in as a fan.  Of course, Judge happened (Sooooooo much fun). It's easy to say, "Pray for Vegas". Despite the actuality of doing so, it's also become so common place in rhetoric. Soooooo...you know, the thing to say to encapsulate our feelings, or even, to fill the void of what we're afraid to acknowledge - we CAN  could have stopped this.  There is a part of me that sits and writes this very post, finding myself in a mental daze, almost a somber state of mental over-paralysis by way of the evil doings and human shortcomings in the world.  As of late, it's been Harvey. Irma. Maria. Houston. Florida. Puerto Rico.  There are protests. Taking a knee. Injustice. White privilege. And "patriotism". Not to be forgotten is Chicago. Immigrants. Charlottesville. And of course, Flint.  They have YET to receive water. Clean water.  Can we just get Flint some damn, clean water?
