Sunday Sundown Rundown - 2/7/16

3 Up

1. Kevin Reilly - A huge tip of the cap to Kevin Reilly who in the midst of a huge construction crane being whipped about by 40mph freakish winds in lower Manhattan, was able to react quickly and with poise by directing the falling crane into the streets. IF not for his actions, the crane was headed for many nearby buildings. It should be noted, the one casualty was indeed a man who was crushed to death who was on his way to work. A tragic and tough situation, but Reilly potentially saved the lives of many.

2. Lionel Messi - These are the types of stories we all wish we saw more of from our top athletes in the world. After a picture of an Afghan boy in blue and white striped plastic bag with "Messi 10" written all over it went viral over social media (the bag attempting to replicate the Argentinian's national jersey), Messi has agreed to meet the young boy. So awesome. Hopefully, he gets him a real jersey as well.

3. Peyton Manning - It's hard for anyone to not to feel happy for Peyton Manning tonight as he won his second Super Bowl. Especially, under the circumstances that he has dealt with this past year. It's most likely the last hurrah, but what a way to go out! OMAHA!!!

3 Down

1. Flint Water Crisis Negligence - The more we hear about the truth and effects of the Flint water crisis, the more disgusting it is to comprehend. For me, the worst part is reading that for a mere extra $9,000 in the budget per year, Flint officials could have provided clean water for the town. $9,000!! Now they'll spend Billions to clean up this mess. On top of that, the GM plant in the area was the only place to receive clean water. Messed up, right? This has Erin Brokovich all over it. Are our elected officials that awful? My goodness...

2. Bret Hart Cancer - A childhood favorite as well as my favorite wrestler of all-time, Bret Hart, announced this week that he had, and will be fighting prostate cancer. Here is to hoping he forces cancer to tap out! Maybe even slapping it in a sharpshooter! All the best in beating that ugly disease, Hitman!

3. Johnny Manziel's Circle - Finally, beating your girlfriend and threaten her life is an easy nod for one of the "downs" of the week. However, I want to slap Manziel's family and friends with this week's down for waiting this long before attempting to curtail his problems. There were obviously signs of this, but it seemed the cash and fame cow were too large to risk bringing it up. I hope Manziel gets the help he needs. Forget football, this young man's current situation and life is much bigger than any roster spot right now.

Dome Pondering Movie Review: Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F

What is it about? Axel Foley returns to Beverly Hills after his daughter's life is threatened and works with his old pals to help solve the issue.  Who is in it? Eddie Murphy - Axel Foley Joseph Gordon-Levitt - Detective Bobby Abbott Taylour Paige - Jane Saunders Favorite Scene: It was cheesy but so nostalgic. I loved it when Serge returned as they "looked" at the house.  Favorite Quote: "G*d, I Missed You, Axel" Review: I had A LOT of reservations once I heard that another installment of Beverly Hills Cops was on deck. After all, I love the first two installments, and the third did enough damage to the series that trying to get this franchise back on rail for more felt like a tough climb.  Also, this era of reboots, remakes, and rehashes rarely hit the target. Just see "Coming 2 America". The point is: that some classics just need to be left alone.  However, Axel F very much surprised me. Maybe it was the low expectations (I doubt it), but I enjoyed e

USA's Big Win Over Serbia & Appreciating LeBron, Durant, and Curry

That was one of the best basketball games I've witnessed. There is certainly a lot to be said about the FIBA style vs. NBA product, however, the sheer storylines, talent, and passion on display were remarkable.  I'm also thankful to the Peacock App which allowed basketball junkies like myself to watch as many hoops, regardless of country, during the 2024 Olympics.  Before sharing some rather quick thoughts, I will just say that we do need to drop the tired sports talk and culture we currently have. Just appreciate Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, and LeBron James while they grace a basketball court. Appreciate it. We won't have it for much longer.  Yes, LeBron James is absolutely amazing (haters, keep your buts, however, and tired Jordan comparisons to yourself). But have we really wrapped our collective thought process that this dude is 40 years old?! In the words of one of my favorites, Gus Johnson, Kevin Durant is just "puuuuuuuuuure" And speaking of Durant, it says

Sunday Sundown Rundown - 8/11/24

3 Up 1. Olympics - It was a memorable Olympics for various reasons. Quite honestly, it was one of the best Olympic Games in my lifetime. I sort of miss having so many options to watch sports - a variety of them - on the daily.  1a. Peacock App - It's still an app with a frustrating user interface, but having the option to watch sports on-demand was awesome. My appreciation to ALL involved in making that happen.  2. Tim Walz - In the "up" is the announcement of Walz as the VP pick for Kamala Harris. Walz gets the nod here not because of an endorsement, but because I thought he did a great job entering the race this week. And also, it's good to finally get both tickets set as we steamroll to Election Day.  3. Presidential Debate - Well, we've got the second one locked in for September 10th. Just when you thought there was no point in tuning into debates (especially after the last one), Trump vs. Kamala has the makings of a one-time knock-down drag out).  3 Down 1. F
