Dear Son, Next Weekend!

--38 Weeks (Before Birth)--

Dear Son,

This is going to sound absolutely absurd, especially considering the series of posts to you at this juncture, but here it goes: your mother and I had our first jaw-dropping moment in this entire experience called pregnancy.

We sat there in a doctor's office going through the usual Q&A to close out a typical visit, to which we then heard the following statement, "...with that said, we're looking at next weekend."

My reaction was exactly as described in my opener - jaw dropped, eyes wide open, thought process halted, with a part of me wondering where the time had gone, and another hoping there was a moment to follow where the doctor said, "just kidding."

But she was dead serious. Your arrival is indeed next weekend as those guiding your mother's pregnancy have all recommend that you meet us after 39 weeks, instead of the usual 40.

So yeah, in true pro wrestling fashion, you've given the proverbial "this weekend" warning, and even managed to draw some hype for your debut. And yes, I'm hoping by the time you're reading this you'll be well versed on pro wrestling lingo. And yes, your mother is indeed secretly dreading the day you become a pro wrestling fan. But we know that's inevitable.

Nonetheless, somehow, someway, June - late-June to be exact, as we've been saying for months - is here. Repeating that statement constantly to co-workers, my students (by the way who are SUPER excited for your arrival, and have already thrown their name into the yet to be determined babysitting bowl), and any one else who has asked about you, worked itself eventually into this built-in security  measure.

After all, when it was first said - late-June - it was a few months away. But late-June is here. And as the old Yogism goes, it gets late, early.

So yes, tonight, we were jarred. Yet, during our customary whatever-craving-mom-currently-has-after-doctor-visits dinner, we both realized we're more afraid of the unknown that is the actual birthing process and experience more so than not being ready for you. Because we are. We're ready. And so very excited.

Speaking for myself, I can tell you that over the past three years, your existence and now arrival, has been the most exciting thing I've had in my life. I can explain so much more on this period one day, but these past years have been a period of growing up very fast, shouldering immense responsibility for others, and in many ways, sacrificing my own being many times. But looking back on it, it's literally all characteristics of fatherhood. And looking back on it, God is beautiful in that way. We just never see the entire painting in the midst of it's progress. Lesson one: God is good. Don't let anyone tell you differently.

So yeah, it has been a long time coming for me. Even in these final days, I find myself doing everything possible to prepare and even get a head start on this new chapter set to begin - next weekend.

I'm so ready that I even use your name at times in my thought process and a few times almost let it slip aloud. Your mom and I agreed we would use the generic "Baby R" name until you were born.  It's hard though, because you have a pretty dope name. But really, it's just that exciting.

But again, next weekend.

Next. Weekend.

It took us by surprise today. But something tells me that won't be the first time you do that to us.

We're ready.

See you next weekend.

Sincerely,

Your-not-sure-what's about-to-happen Dad

Sunday Sundown Rundown - 11/20/22

3 Up 1. Bad Bunny - Congratulations (and major breakthrough props) are in order for Bad Bunny who made history with the first Spanish-Language Album of the Year nomination. The dude has been crushing it with major cross-over appeal - and yes, he's a helluva wrestler.  2. Taylor Swift - This could be a down because of the entire Ticketmaster ordeal, but Swift gets the "Up" solely because only she can break Ticketmaster like this. The star power continues to be amazing.  3. FIFA World Cup - Sure, there is plenty of negatives to get into here, but the event itself is amazing. I'm ready to get caught up in it all.  3 Down 1. Iran Protestors - The nation is in political unrest and many protesters being caught are being sentenced to harsh penalties, or worse, death. Just more instability  2. U.S. Mass Shootings - We just continue to give access to individuals who shouldn't have guns. We've become so numb to this. What have we become?  Prayers, comfort, and positive

3 Up 1. Protection of Same-Sex Marriage - Well, what do you know? Our elected officials CAN work together to get important policies completed that accurately and democratically represent the people. Cynicism aside, it's good to see this bill get passed. Imagine the huge step back that this would have been. 2. Britney Griner Home - I honestly don't care about the politics around this story. Griner needed to come home. And I'm glad she finally is.  3. Impact Wrestling Main Event - Everything that was "Speedball" Mike Bailey vs. "The Walking Weapon" Josh Alexander on this week's episode of Impact Wrestling was what makes pro wrestling so great. Both guys put on a classic that lasted almost an hour, and it was one of the best matches I've enjoyed in a long time. Kudos to both men.  3 Down 1. Grant Wahl - It's the kind of story that is super emotional for the following reasons: 1) Wahl was the premiere journalist in the soccer real; 2) Wahl was be

3 Up 1. Healthcare Debt Removed from Credit Score - This is a small win in a direction that just seems, well...reasonable. Healthcare is expensive and not exactly the fault of an individual's ability to handle their finances responsibly. The subtle change (with restrictions) is a nice addition that ought to help many battling health issues, yet not derail their entire personal life.  2. Alyssa Thompson - The teenage phenom comes off gaining some International play but becoming the first overall pick in the NWSL. Thompson's future is SO bright, and this should be part of that narrative when we marvel at her journey.  3. Ozone Layer Recovery - For years, as a kid, I remember hearing that "we were constantly damaging the Ozone layer". Many thanks to Captain Planet and the Planeteers for that insight. I'm glad to see there has been some progress there.  3 Down 1. Brazil Democracy - It's a shame to see politicians around the world pull from our history with senti

3 Up  1. Rail Workers Agreement - The nation avoiding a major - major! - supply chain issue when the Rail Workers union settled their dispute. In the process we learned that these workers had one - one! - sick day per year. That's absolutely insane. How could you not root for the union here to win? And they did.  2. Protecting Same-Sex/Interracial Marriage - It's amazing that we have to politicize and advocate as people for these kid of things, but here we are.  3. World Cup - Sports biggest event continues on with some thrilling games and upsets. Selfishly giving some love to the US Men's National Team who survived Group Play and made it to the Knockout stages.  3 Down 1. "Terminating the Constitution" - Look, I'm so over bashing Donald Trump. That's my neutral take on it all. My political take is this, how did we get here? Candidates are calling for ripping up the document that we base everything off of? Again, how did we get here?  2. Hate Speech on Twi
