True Tales From Parks and Recreation - Self-Made Job Interview

Note: I used to work for a park slowly in continued development in Manhattan that is five miles along the waterfront of the Hudson River. As a Public Programs Coordinator, yours truly handled anything public related in regards to permitting (athletic facilities, film shoots, photo shoots, weddings, and other small gatherings), and of course, dealing with any questions or inquiries from the public. The following series will present stories, e-mails, phone calls, conversations, interactions, and sights I've seen from the people of New York City in regards to a public park. And yes, these are all real! And are all true!

Welcome to another little snippet of Parks and Recreation.

As part of my duties in parks and recreation, I had a hand in hiring seasonal employees and interns during our peak summer months. Very similar to the weird and outrageous e-mails I would receive from the public complaining about any and everything, I often received some job inquiries which were just as head scratching. One of my favorite was the following from a college junior who was looking for a seasonal position:

Hello,
I was wondering if you have had the chance to look at my resume? Isn't it the best you've received? Is there a time when we could organize a phone interview? If you want, I can come in on Friday to pretty much show you why this job search is over! I'll be in to wow you and claim my job on Friday.

And rest assured, he was in on Friday, without an appointment for an interview. In fact, no one even reached out or contacted him. His resume was filled with grammatical errors, including a favorite of mine: a bold point emphasizing "extensive knowledge and skills using various web browsers".

You can't make this stuff up.

Needless to say, security escorted him out of the office as fast as his bold and arrogant courage brought him in.

Dear Son, Big Fan of the Kid Turning Seven

---7 Years Old --- Dear Son,  It’s been a while since I’ve dropped a few thoughts. Forgive me, I’ve just been watching. Just observing. Taking it all in. Trying to be a good dad. I’m punching the keys today from one of your martial arts practices. It’s your second with “the big kids” and also the second time I’ve found myself watching from the sidelines with anxiety, with pride, and with likely my biggest fandom for you yet in this space. My feelings are much more than you playing baseball or coaching you in basketball. Your disposition is different. Your excellence is different in this space. With martial arts, you stay diligent with the process. Respectful. Working hard. Getting better. In competition with and respecting the older kids you are training with. That’s what I’ve enjoyed. It encapsulates everything you’ve grown into thus far. Still empathetic as ever, but adding an element of self-ambition and drive - something I’ve prided myself on - and to see you mature into this m...
